The word nichrome was created to describe this wire, which is made of a
nickle and chromium alloy. The cool thing about this metal is that it
is a very poor conductor of electricity so a ton of electrons are
converted to heat energy. This is the same wire that you find in hair
dryers, toaster ovens, heat dishes and heat lamps. We use it to
illustrate the conversion of electrical energy to heat energy with a 1.5
volt “D” battery. If you hook it up to a 6 volt lantern battery, you’d
better be planning to brand something.
