Range of Experiments
Measurement of the redundant fixed end moment in a two span continuous beam
Description
The
model is built on a pressed steel base with plastic piers that support a
single span flexible steel beam on swivelling bearings which can
accommodate horizontal movement while enabling external moments to be
applied and measured. An inserted locking pin makes a fixed end.
Rotation of the beam at the support is shown by a large coloured pointer
moving across a dual scale, the coarse one being readily seen at 10 m
distance. Dual deflection scales on adjustable vertical posts enable
displacements to be measured and seen at 10 m distance. One end support
has a screw straining device for imposing a fixed rotation.
This
equipment is part of a range designed to both demonstrate and
experimentally confirm basic engineering principles. Great care has been
given to each item so as to provide wide experimental scope without
unduly complicating or compromising the design. Each piece of apparatus
is self-contained and compact. Setting up time is minimal, and all
measurements are made with the simplest possible instrumentation, so
that the student involvement is purely with the engineering principles
being taught. A complete instruction manual is provided describing the
apparatus, its application, experimental procedure and typical test
results.
